STEP TWO

Place the wrapped buds between the hair straightener irons and apply significant pressure. Keep applying force as the resin oozes out of the flowers. Release the irons when the goo stops flowing. Unwrap the pressed buds to reveal a fresh patch of rosin. Repeat this process until you’ve made around 0.5g of rosin. You’ll need around 3g of high-quality herb to achieve this amount.

STEP THREE

Place the rosin-covered parchment paper into the fridge for around 20 minutes. Remove your cooled bounty and scrape off the rosin using a sturdy toothpick; place it in the glass vial. Add a few drops of your preferred terpenes or flavouring into the jar.

STEP FOUR

Next, you’ll need to mix your rosin and flavouring into an oil. To do this, you’ll need to flash heat the vial. Hold a flame underneath the container for around five seconds, or until the solution begins to bubble. Any less and the two substances won’t mix. Any more, and you’ll degrade the volatile terpenes. As soon as the mixture starts to bubble, remove the flame and give it a good mix using a toothpick. Then, draw the solution into a syringe and inject it into your vape pen cartridge.

STEP TWO

Pour the vegetable oil into the large Pyrex dish—enough to submerge the bottom inch of the small Pyrex dish. Place the oil on the stove or a hot plate and place the thermometer sensor inside. Heat the mixture up to a temperature of 104°C.

STEP THREE

Place the small Pyrex dish into the hot oil bath and insert the second thermometer into the mix of VG and broken-down buds. The aim is to heat the solution to around 82°C to allow the cannabinoids to diffuse into the VG. Maintain this temperature for 45 minutes and stir the mixture frequently.

STEP FOUR

Remove the small Pyrex dish from the oil bath and let it cool for several minutes. Next, place a sieve over a glass jar to strain the mixture. Use a spatula to press the bud against the sieve to extract as much liquid as possible. Repeat steps two and three a total of two times to extract as much THC as possible, using fresh VG each time.

STEP FIVE

Now that you’ve collected three runs in the glass jar, it’s time to purify your vape juice. Clean and dry your sieve; place it over a clean glass jar and add around four layers of cheesecloth. Pour your vape juice onto the cheesecloth and watch it filter through into the jar. Use the spatula to squeeze out any residue.

STEP SIX

Add your purified vape juice back into the small Pyrex dish. Heat up the oil bath and place the small Pyrex dish inside. Insert your thermometer and heat up the vape juice to exactly 104°C for 30 minutes. This will convert precursor cannabinoid THCA into psychoactive THC via decarboxylation.

STEP SEVEN

You’re all done! Use a dropper bottle or syringe to load up your vape pen cartridge with clean and potent vape juice!

VEGETABLE GLYCERIN (LONG-TERM)

After one month, remove the lid and stir the mixture well. Add a tablespoon of VG, stir again, and return to storage for another month. Repeat this process again one month later.

STEP 5

At the end of the third month, stir the mixture and strain through a sieve into another mason jar. Use the spatula to assist the process. Clean the sieve and original jar. Line the sieve with four layers of cheesecloth and strain the vape juice back into the original jar. Press out any residue with the spatula.

Use a syringe to add your vape juice into a cartridge—enjoy!

THE DIVERSE WORLD OF CANNABIS CONCENTRATES

Modern technology has given rise to a host of different concentrates that outweigh these traditional options when it comes to potency. These include solvent concentrates such as shatter, CO₂ oil, butane hash oil (BHO), Rick Simpson oil (RSO), and live resin. Some of the most popular solventless extracts include rosin, distillate, and bubble hash.

WHAT IS TERP SAUCE?

Terp sauce falls into the solvent concentrates category. Crafters typically make it using flash-frozen cannabis buds—but the most important aspect is to start with the best genetics possible. The flowers are first made into BHO and then left to age and crystallise. The end result is a viscious terpene sauce that engulfs diamond-like THCA crystals.

Terp sauce has become so popular thanks to the rise of terpenes themselves. Cannabinoids were once the be-all and end-all when smoking weed. However, science has unveiled the importance of terpenes and how they modify the effects of cannabis. Users are seeking higher levels of terpenes to enrich the taste of their experience, as well as the effects.

The terpenes and crystals are then separated and purged. The terps are purged for around 60 hours, and the crystals for 72 hours. Once all the solvent has been removed, the crystals and terps and reunited and packed into UV-proof containers. The end result is a sauce rich in terpenes with a cannabinoid content of anywhere between 30–50%.

HOW IS TERP SAUCE MADE?

HTFSE VS HCFSE

Cannabis extracts belong to two categories: high-terpene full-spectrum extracts (HTFSEs) and high-cannabinoid full-spectrum extracts (HCFSEs). HTFSEs consist of around 50% THCA and anywhere between 13–40% terpenes. In contrast, HCFSEs consist of around 90% THCA and far fewer terps.

THE IMPORTANCE OF FULL SPECTRUM

Colossal levels of cannabinoids used to be all the rage. Nowadays, terpenes are also held in high regard. It’s now known that terpenes play a large role in the psychoactive and therapeutic effects of particular strains. · Parchment paper

DIRECTIONS

STEP 1

Once you’ve made a batch of rosin, you’ll need to achieve a waxy texture. By pressing rosin from bubble hash, you’ll experience this consistency right away. If you’re using rosin pressed from flowers, stir it over a heating mat at no higher than 50ºC. Unfortunately, some terpenes will evaporate at this temperature. However, the rosin will develop a nice, buttery consistency.

STEP 2

Next, we need to prep the rosin for the separation process. Pack your rosin in a rosin bag; 25 micron is ideal, but 37 will work. Wrap the bag up tightly in a piece of parchment paper. Leave one end of the package open.

STEP 3

Set up you rosin press to around 55ºC. Place your wrapped rosin inside with the open end facing you. Lower the press down so it makes contact with the package. Wait around 60 seconds for the heat of the plate to warm up the resin. Now, apply gentle and slow pressure. Maintain this level of pressure until the plates are closed, and terpene-rich rosin begins oozing out. Keep applying pressure until the sauce stops flowing.

STEP 4

Open the plates, remove the contents, and open the package. The pressed concentrate will stick to the parchment paper. Remove the paper and wrap the loaded rosin bag in a fresh sheet. Press the package again using the same technique, this time at around 80ºC. Remove the parchment. Upon opening the rosin bag, you’ll discover a yellow-white block of THCA.

HOW TO MAKE TERP SAUCE AT HOME

STEP 5

Place the THCA on a sheet of parchment paper and heat it over the plates without adding pressure. The substance will become liquid at around 120ºC. After it cools, break it up into chunky crystals.

STEP 6

Lightly heat up the terpene-rich goo that you pressed out earlier. Once it becomes viscious, add it to your THCA crystals. There you have it! Your own stash of terp sauce seasoned with THCA crystals!

INCONSISTENCIES WITH TERP SAUCE

The biggest problem with terp sauce is a lack of consistency. It’s all too easy to substitute terp sauce for a similarly runny, syrupy cannabis concentrate. Ageing slabs of shatter that have been sitting in the coffeeshop or cannabis club too long will change consistency over time. Eventually, it begins to break down and look like sauce, especially during the hot summer weather.

By nature, terp sauce and live resin achieve similar end products. Indeed, most terp sauce-makers use live resin to preserve the aroma and flavour of a given strain. Where things start to differ is in the post-extraction process. Whereas live resin is pretty much done, terp sauce now has to go through the vital curing and separation process outlined above.
